Social Emotional Core Safety Skill Set Overview
Stay Aware & Act Confident
Pay attention so you notice what is happening around you and can avoid most trouble. Show with your body and your attitude that you are alert, believe in yourself, and respect others.
Use Boundaries to Prevent Problems
Recognize what IS and is NOT your choice. Notice when your boundaries are crossed. Express what you DO want and what you do NOT want. Stay in charge of what you say and do so that you act safely and respectfully towards yourself and others.
Move Away From Trouble
Recognize when safety problems might be about to start so you can take action sooner rather than later. Give yourself space instead of staying close to trouble. Be prepared to leave someone, who is acting unsafely, in a powerful and respectful way.
Get Help When You Have a Safety Problem
Know how to get help everywhere you go including at home, at school, or out in public. Be polite and persistent in getting help when you need it, including interrupting busy, impatient adults.
Stay Safe With Strangers & In Public
Recognize when you are together with your adults or people who can help you or when you are on your own. Think First or Check First before you talk to, take something from, or get close to someone you don’t know well when you are on your own. Get help from strangers if you are having a big emergency.
Stop Bullying By Taking Charge Of Safety
Recognize different kinds of in-person or electronic bullying. Protect yourself from harm. Take action to protect the rights of others. Use the Positive Problem-Solving Recipe. Commit to treating everyone with kindness, respect, and safety.
Stay Safe with Touch, Teasing, & Games
Touch, teasing, and games for fun and affection should be safe, the choice of each person, allowed by the adults in charge, and not a secret. Speak up for yourself, and listen to others.
Stay Safe With Feelings & Words
Protect your feelings from hurtful words and rude behavior. Use positive self-talk. Use your HeartPower to take in kindness, to protect your heart, and to be kind to others. Avoid saying hurtful words to others, no matter how you feel inside.
Think First & Check First With Your Adults
Check first with your responsible adults before you change your plan about where you are going, what you are doing, and who is with you. Think first to assess and make safe choices in person and online when you are not with one of your adults.
Stay Safe With Private Areas
Know where people’s private areas are. Recognize inappropriate or unsafe behavior about private areas. Set boundaries and get help to resist bribes, emotional pressure, or misuses of power.
Be Powerful With Your Voice & Your Body
Be prepared to yell, run, pull away, and protect yourself physically to get away from a person who is acting dangerously or who is making you feel scared so that you can get to safety and get help. If you cannot leave or get help, you can use emergency self-defense to escape from danger.
Use Kidpower Every Day With Everyone
Discuss and practice how to apply Kidpower strategies and skills to preventing and solving different kinds of safety problems in your daily life everywhere you go and with every person you meet. Teach these skills to others.
