Skills for intervening to de-escalate conflict are essential for supporting greater safety and positive connections in families, schools, organizations, workplaces, and communities.
Recently, we provided an online intervention skills workshop to help staff of a large K-12 school prevent and stop bullying – and a de-escalation skills workshop for the staff of a large organization serving adults with disabilities.
Our new article, Safetypowers De-escalation Strategies and Skills – For Leaders Supporting People with Developmental Disabilities. describes some of the practices and kinds of role plays we used in these trainings.
Although the specific situations are often different, we teach many of the following strategies and skills in all of our intervention and de-escalation skills workshops:
-
- Put Safety First
- Split Your Attention to Avoid Tunnel Vision
- Passive, Aggressive, Assertive Practice
- Don’t take someone’s rude or thoughtless behavior personally
- How to practice different ways of facing aggression
- Intervention Role Play Practices
- Make Safety Plans With Your Team
- Teach everyone positive communication, personal safety, self-regulation, and help-seeking skills.
- A ‘Calm Down Power’ Success Story
