It’s normal to believe human trafficking is something that happens to ‘other people’ in places, families, or communities far from our own.

And, many victims of human trafficking say later, “I never thought it would happen to me, or to my family, or in my community.”

The truth is, if you or your loved ones ever go out in public, go online, or use mobile devices, then you, too, are at potential risk of human trafficking, which is the use of emotional, legal, or economic coercion or of physical violence to force someone to provide labor or sexual services.

Trafficking can happen to anyone no matter their age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, or abilities. Human trafficking can happen anywhere in the world, in every country and every kind of community.

Free 10 min video: ‘Staying Safe From Human Trafficking’

That doesn’t mean we need to stay home and stay offline to be safe. It just means we need knowledge and skills to protect ourselves – and also to protect and empower those in our care until they have the skills to protect themselves.

To equip you and other adults and older teens with tools to stay safe from human trafficking, we created this positive, powerful, and practical video, Staying Safe From Human Trafficking, which is available free of charge thanks to our donors.

In this ten-minute video, you’ll learn:

    • what human trafficking is
    • how it happens
    • how to recognize danger signals and grooming behavior
    • how to get away and get help.

This video is not designed for younger teens and youth and will not be emotionally safe for many of them. Please watch it yourself before sharing it in any way with younger teens or youth.

Remember – you can teach skills without talking about the bad things that sometimes happen! See our article Teaching Kids to Be Safe Without Making Them Scared for strategies you can use right away to teach kids age-appropriate skills that will help them be safe from bullying, abuse, and other harm including human trafficking – in ways that are FUN, not frightening.

Many groups and communities organize our live online workshops to learn how to practice and teach these skills together with an experienced instructor. Explore our live training options at safetypowers.org/workshops or contact us about how to organize your own program tailored for your family and friends, school, organization or workplace.
