When an abduction attempt hits the news – or, worse yet, if a young person is kidnapped – a wave of sorrow and fear goes through parents, schools, and communities.  Teaching children about “stranger danger” does not protect them from kidnapping and can make them worried without making them safer. Just lecturing young people about safety or just showing them what to do is not enough.

Raising awareness about potential danger without raising knowledge and skills for staying safe can cause anxiety. You can protect your kids from most abduction attempts and other safety problems both with people they know and people they don’t by knowing what to watch out for and how to prepare them before letting them go anywhere on their own without adult protection.

Giving kids opportunities to practice safety skills successfully helps to increase their confidence and competence and to reduce their anxiety. Kidpower teaches how to do this in a way that is not scary, but is fun. Scroll down for articles, videos, podcasts, publications, and workshops that show how to protect children from kidnapping and teach them to be safe with strangers.

three girls standing in a row with one arm outstretched, palm facing out, yelling

"A man jumped out of the bushes at my nine-year-old daughter, who was rollerblading to school, and ordered her to come with him. If she had not had your training, I think she would have collapsed and cried. Instead, she shouted, “NO!” and rollerbladed all the way to safety, which was her teacher at school."
