I joined Kidpower in 2013, shortly after the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting, when I found myself shopping for a Kevlar backpack for my 7-year-old. But a bulletproof backpack wasn’t going to protect my child from bullies, predators, or abuse.
Around the same time, I learned that people close to me had experienced childhood abuse, often at the hands of someone they trusted. I looked at my own child and wondered: Had I given her the skills to stay safe? I knew I hadn’t.
Kidpower changed that. My family communicates better, and whether my children are away at college or heading to a high-school party, I know they have the skills to stay safe and get help. And I can sleep.
Today, I dream of a world where every child has an ACE score of zero. At my first Kidpower workshop, I thought, “If only I’d had these skills growing up!” So much trauma and abuse is preventable.
Everyone deserves the skills to take charge, stay safe, and get help. Kidpower is already teaching them around the world! With more resources, we can reach so many more.
