Strategic Action Plan

Overview

The six key areas of focus in the strategic plan are:

Each area is of equal consideration and merit in this strategic plan document.

Each area will have a Goals section and a Strategic Action Plan section.

The individual Goals and separate “actions” of the Strategic Action Plan are of equal priority in each area.

This document is based on an extensive “Strategic Analysis for Kidpower” that is available upon request.

The name “Kidpower” is used here to refer to the Central Office of “Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower International.”


Leadership and Organizational Development

Goals

  • Kidpower will continue to be an international community of leaders working together to sustain the organization’s mission, goals, values, and best practices.
  • Kidpower will have a governing Board of Directors, a Senior Program Leader Council, and an Executive Director all working in partnership to serve as caretakers and stewards for the entire organization.
  • Kidpower will support self–reliant and autonomous centers that will operate within the international organization as interdependent, self-sustaining, and mutually supportive entities.
  • Kidpower will continue to celebrate together and put a high value on the unique role of each individual in the organization.
  • Kidpower will provide the opportunities for individuals to meet periodically to share ideas and grow as a team and as a community.
  • Kidpower will have a system in place to support and nurture new people and new leaders, new centers, and partner organizations.
  • Kidpower will have a strong infrastructure in place so that organizational quality remains consistent and sustainable.
  • Kidpower will have clear, written quality standards and detailed procedures and training programs for center administration, workshop coordination, marketing and public relations, fundraising, instructor training, delivery of services, and development of educational materials.

Strategic Action Plan

  • Continue to create structures for communication so that people from all areas and locations of the organization can work effectively together.
  • Continue to put a premium on leadership development for the Board of Directors, Senior Program Leader Council, and staff throughout the organization.
  • Use the 20 Year Celebration Conference in July 2009 as a time for organizational and leadership development.
  • Review and revise existing job descriptions and functions of paid and volunteer staffing.
  • Provide information, guidance, and assistance to encourage centers to establish their own local boards.
  • Maintain a clear distinction between the relatively small number of people who are certified Kidpower service providers and the far greater number of people who gain ideas and skills from our training and educational resources.

Resource Development

Goals

  • Kidpower will develop sufficient funding resources to have a well-staffed Central Office that is financially self-sustaining.
  • Kidpower will support and nurture individual centers to be self-sustaining with ample financial and people resources.
  • Kidpower will provide overall operational support and seed money to initiate new programs.
  • Kidpower staff members will receive salaries and benefits commensurate with those in like non-profit organizations.
  • Kidpower fees for services will cover the full costs for delivery.
  • Kidpower will create an endowment to support the organization in perpetuity.
  • Kidpower will continue to reach out to people who are in need and will support new populations who cannot otherwise afford services.
  • Kidpower will have sufficient paid staff to build, maintain and grow a strong individual and corporate donor relations program as well as a program that will solicit major government and foundation grants.

Strategic Action Plan

  • Develop fundraising materials that reflect the high quality of services, including a formal Annual Report and a reorganized and revitalized website.
  • Develop funding for infrastructure development in addition to providing services.
  • Reach out to expand paid services to target populations (i.e. independent schools) that have the potential interest in and resources to pay for services.
  • Increase partnerships and pursue formal contracts with human service organizations, schools, businesses, government agencies, and other well-established entities.
  • Use web-based technology and related media to facilitate the transfer of effective funding development strategies between the central office and centers.
  • Evaluate the roles and responsibilities of volunteers and paid staff in the organization as a whole.

Long-Term Growth

Goals

  • Kidpower will remain a viable and sustainable entity with a solid and well-defined infrastructure that will support and grow the organization.
  • Kidpower will keep its quality consistently high as new centers emerge and existing centers grow.
  • Kidpower will build long-term partnerships with other human service, educational, law enforcement, and health organizations and agencies locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally.
  • Kidpower will identify specific groups and places where the organization can provide services.

Strategic Action Plan

  • Expand and grow services through providing resources to people outside of the organization’s existing channels and networks.
  • Set priorities and standards for potential partners and establish systems for developing relationships with target organizations and private and public agencies.
  • Seek people who are to be accepted into center development and instructor training programs to be highly self-sufficient and to meet Kidpower’s high standards for integrity and competence;
  • Increase the use of technology to build and foster relationships and provide mentoring support to centers and individuals—both locally and regionally.

Marketing and Public Relations

Goals

  • Kidpower will have strong name and visual identity recognition so that the Kidpower “brand” will be considered a prominent and trustworthy “name” nationally and globally, and in the media, for bringing safety, empowerment, and confidence to people of all ages and abilities, especially children and youth in need.
  • Kidpower will have secure professional expertise to manage the publicity and public relations for the organization.
  • Kidpower via its Central Office will provide global and national marketing direction and name recognition.
  • Kidpower via each center and with the support and guidance of the Central Office will seek to develop  its own budget and staff for marketing and public relations that will focus on their local communities.
  • Kidpower’s free e-newsletter will increase in circulation substantially.
  • Kidpower’s “People Safety” education and “Successful Practice” teaching method will become widely accepted in local communities as providing essential “tools to live by.”

Strategic Action Plan

  • Make building a strong, positive public image a high priority at all levels of the organization.
  • Implement the new logo and visual identity widely throughout the organization.
  • Provide training to local centers in how to gain publicity and in how to reach out to community leaders who can increase our local visibility and credibility.
  • Use social networking tools to increase the visibility in local communities for Kidpower programs and services.
  • Build relationships with local corporations whose customers and staff could become potential consumers, sponsors, and donors of Kidpower.
  • Establish relationships and networks with regional, statewide, and national organizations, businesses, prominent individuals, and government agencies that could assist favorably with building name recognition and positive understanding of the value of Kidpower.

Program and Products

Goals

  • Kidpower will continue to create and provide workshops, publications, a website, e-newsletter, films, and training modules to bring safety, empowerment, and confidence to as many people as possible.
  • Kidpower will continue to have all its services and educational materials aligned with its organizational vision, mission, goals, and values.
  • Kidpower will provide and produce programs and products that will be widely known as being the “gold standard” of quality in the field of safety and personal empowerment.
  • Kidpower will have a growing range of products that reflect and advance its work with diverse populations.
  • Kidpower publications and program documentation will be widely distributed throughout the world, adapted to be culturally appropriate, and readily translated into the relevant languages.

Strategic Action Plan

  • Develop a formalized and accessible training of trainers program.
  • Create new categories of certification for specific parts of the trainers’ program.
  • Seek additional funding to support product development and marketing.
  • Seek in-kind support to obtain professional expertise.
  • Partner with other organizations and businesses that share the Kidpower ethos and goals.
  • Continue to develop products to meet the needs of specific populations.
  • Use the restructured website as an educational tool and resource for individuals and organizations as well as Kidpower trainers and regular participants.

Technology

Goals

  • Kidpower will invest in up-to-date and reliable computer equipment and software throughout the organization.
  • Kidpower will have systems that ensure and streamline accurate record-keeping, data collection, and comprehensive reporting.
  • Kidpower will have administrative, procedural, informational, and program-specific documents that are up-to-date and easily accessible for all centers through a web-based central storage space.
  • Kidpower will have cost-effective and readily accessible tools and support systems for communication and training purposes with a reliable infrastructure and predictable capacity.
  • Kidpower will be pro-active and persistent in reviewing and renewing its commitment to the Kidpower web-site.

Strategic Action Plan

  • Incorporate into the organizational budget the costs of using and improving technology.
  • Find professional expertise to help identify and implement new technological resources that would improve operations and communications throughout the organization.
  • Develop a technology training plan and a central office “help desk” to help solve specific problems.
  • Work with all centers to set up their own websites following standardized Kidpower guidelines.
  • Develop a consistent technological methodology and design for all centers.
