Watch this video to witness the joy and power of children and women in rural Nepal as they are learning skills to stay safe from bullying, abuse, and violence.
Shusma Pokhrel, Kidpower International’s Director for Nepal, has traveled for countless hours to remote parts of the country to teach safety and self-defense skills to over 20,000 children, adolescent girls, and vulnerable women. Her students live in extreme poverty and are at high risk of abuse, violence, and exploitation.
Shusma is a brilliant trainer who is also preparing educators in these schools to continue teaching safety and self-defense skills to their students. In addition, she has taught hundreds of women who are survivors of child abuse and domestic violence.
“I have been a teacher for 37 years, and today’s training made me realize for the first time the importance of Safety and Self Defense Skills. Many students are unsafe on their way to and from school. I believe that this training will definitely decrease these incidents. All students need to have access to Kidpower training in an ongoing way.”
“The Kidpower self-defense training was a powerful and eye-opening experience for the women in our literacy program. Many said it was their first experience learning these skills and that it gave them greater confidence and awareness. What touched me most was their eagerness to teach their children and grandchildren what they had learned.Beyond learning practical skills, they gained confidence, awareness, and a stronger sense of responsibility to guide and protect their children and grandchildren. Empowering women with the knowledge and confidence to protect themselves helps create safer families and communities ; every woman deserves to feel safe, confident, and free wherever she goes, and this training was an important step toward that goal.”
