The COVID-19 pandemic and the disruption it causes in our lives can feel overwhelming for both adults and children. Just as taking care of our physical well-being is essential, so is taking care of our emotional safety.

Children take their cues from their trusted adults during stressful times about how to respond, and our response can set the tone in a household. Taking care of our own mental health is important to our own well-being, key to helping our children navigate ways to cope with their own feelings about the current situation, and also vital in helping them react to future stressful events.

Since the onset of the pandemic, we have heard many upsetting stories about Asian Americans being insulted, shunned, and physically threatened and assaulted because of misplaced fear and anger that connects Asian Americans directly to the novel coronavirus disease, also known as COVID-19.

During these challenging times our world faces, I’m grateful for and inspired by the organizations and individuals standing up boldly for themselves and for our communities under attack. No matter what the cause – whether it affects one person or billions – a sudden disaster is a shocking reminder that we are vulnerable; that the physical security of ourselves and those we care about is not guaranteed; and that our life can change in an instant.

The most powerful way we can respond to any tragedy is to support each other and to work together to create a better world for everyone. Even if we are frightened and sad ourselves, we can focus on creating safe emotional spaces for everyone to find healing, perspective, hope, and paths to healing action.
